The 4th annual Australian and New Zealand Search and Rescue Conference will be held on Wednesday 23rd May 2018 at the Star Gold Coast. 

Daniel Gillis, Senior Maritime Search and Rescue Officer at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority joins us at the Conference to present ‘Case Study: The value of Australia’s collaborative SAR system in saving lives’.

As with many countries, the design and provision of a national search and rescue (SAR) service has developed over time to best meet the geographic and cultural nuances of our federated nation. The size of Australia, sparse population and our active lifestyle have resulted in a collaborative SAR system including professional SAR practitioners, volunteers, general aviation aircraft, shipping and the public.

Australia’s SAR system is based on “collaboration”, “cooperation” and the concept of operational coordination by the authority “best placed” to lead the response.

This case study of a recent yacht incident in the Base Strait will demonstrate the interoperability of Australia’s SAR system that relies on multiple organisations working effectively together to save lives in distress.

Dan is a Maritime Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator within the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Australian Maritime Safety Authority. He is responsible for the supervision, mentoring and development of a team of specialists in the coordination of search and rescue operations and oversight of operational responses on a 24\7 basis from AMSA’s Joint aviation and maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. Dan also holds a Master’s Degree in Emergency Management and, prior to joining AMSA in 2010, was the State Search and Rescue Coordinator, NSW Police Marine Area Command.
