The 4th annual Australian and New Zealand Search and Rescue Conference will be held on Wednesday 23rd May 2018 at the Star Gold Coast.

Mr John Moy, Manager, Special Projects, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services joins us at the Conference to present ‘Shooting for the Stars! Building High-Performance Teams: The Rocket Model’.

Mr John Moy

Leadership is not an individual process. Rather it involves the ability to influence a group to pursue a goal or achieve a mission. This is particularly relevant in Search and Rescue (SAR) where teamwork is crucial and arguably directly proportional to the success of the SAR mission.

The Rocket Model, which is based upon extensive research, suggests a strategy to team building that is similar to building a rocket itself. This contemporary model has been used extensively and has been successfully adapted across a wide range of settings by a large number of multi-national corporations and organisations. Furthermore, it is gaining popularity due to its straightforward and practical approach.

This session will unpack the eight components of the Rocket Model of team building. It will also show how the tool can also be to diagnose where the team might be falling short and suggest what leaders can do to rectify such. It will be argued that the Rocket Model, if followed, will favourably position any team to shoot for the stars and deal with any SAR challenge that it is confronted with!

John is currently Manager, Special Projects, within the School of Fire and Emergency Services Training (SFEST) within the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES).
