John Young, GM, Emergency Response Division, AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) will be presenting a Keynote Address at the Australian & New Zealand Search and Rescue Conference (SAR) on the 6 May 2015 at Jupiters Gold Coast.

The conference brings together leading search and rescue practitioners to discuss challenges of preparing, deploying and operating search and rescue. The aim of the conference is to facilitate sharing, knowledge and experience between the different search and rescue agencies, enterprises, communities and professionals. Presentations will cover air, sea, land-based, urban, wilderness, domestic and overseas search and rescue.

John YoungJohn was appointed as the General Manager of the Emergency Response Division at AMSA in September 2008.  In that role he is responsible for provision of a national aviation and maritime search and rescue service in consultation with the state Police services and the Australian Defence Force.  He chairs the National Search and Rescue Council under a national inter-governmental arrangement signed by Ministers in 2012.

Additionally the Division assists with coordination of AMSA’s emergency responses for maritime casualties and counter-pollution operations.

AMSA is part of a global network of rescue facilities providing maritime and aviation search and rescue services.  Key elements include operation of the Joint Australian Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC Australia), maintenance of search and rescue service contracts for distress and safety communications, aircraft, helicopters and equipment, and related policy, training and management services.

John was the Manager Search and Rescue Operations at AMSA from 1999 to 2008.  Before that he enjoyed a career in the Royal Australian Navy, serving in Australian and foreign waters.
