The 4th annual Australian and New Zealand Search and Rescue Conference will be held on Wednesday 23rd May 2018 at the Star Gold Coast.

Dave Paylor, Chief Information Officer at Marine Rescue Queensland joins us at the Conference to discuss ‘Development of a Commercial Standard Training Program and an Information Exchange System for Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland’.

Dave Paylor

Volunteer Marine Rescue Queensland (MRQ) has 25 associated squadrons between Yorke Island in the Torres Strait, Gulf of Carpentaria and Currumbin on the Gold Coast. This diverse area and the availability of only two staff and one volunteer trainer posed significant challenges for delivering a consistent standard of training to MRQ’s 1462 volunteers. MRQ decided to train to commercial standards and has developed training materials to suit modules within MAR package.

Each module is available to MRQ volunteers for self-paced and classroom facilitated learning by accessing the “Training” section of MRQ’s Portal in Microsoft Office 365 SharePoint.

The recent development of the Office 365 SharePoint facility is a major step forward in facilitating access to training modules, as well as providing an email facility, opportunity to store squadron specific documents, activation data and documents for sharing across squadrons. Key state documents and manuals as well as a photograph library are also on the Portal. A custom written application builds on this data allowing the recording of training outcomes and rescue vessel activity logging. This further flows through to the individual user logon to allow the user to instantly see such details and progress of training, sea time and details about rescues they have performed.

The presentation will highlight the team work involved in developing the training materials and some of the challenges of moving from the previous Extranet system to the SharePoint Portal. Functionality of the Poral will be demonstrated.

Mr Dave Paylor is an IT specialist with EMPIRED IT Consultants, and an MRQ skipper volunteering with VMR Victoria Point on Moreton Bay.
