The 2017 Search and Rescue Conference will be held this month on the 24th May at The Star Hotel Gold Coast, (previously Jupiter’s) Queensland.  The conference follows the Australian and New Zealand Disaster and Emergency Management Conference, running consecutively at the same venue.

Mr Pete Corbett, Training and Development Manager at NZ Land Search and Rescue joins us at the conference to discuss Implementing a competencies framework within a volunteer organisation, the lessons learned’.

New Zealand’s land search and rescue volunteer organisation, LandSAR, is finally gaining some real traction in implementing a competencies framework. There has always been a sense of inevitability about the introduction of competencies, a journey that started about 10 years ago.  The process from design to implementation has been far from straightforward and there have been valuable lessons learned along the way.

The presentation will explain the rationale for the framework and the relationship between competencies, training and operations as applied by LandSAR.

It will also introduce some of the systems, processes and tools that underpin the framework, in particular the assessment of the competencies, which has presented as the greatest challenge for the volunteer organisation.

The presenters will discuss the absolute need for leadership for the successful implementation of any major change initiative and the value of adopting a Change Team approach.
